Antibiotics in Animals...

Antibiotic resistance is when a type of bacteria is subjected to a particular antibiotic over and over again until only the antibiotic resistant bacteria will survive. This bacteria will then be passed on to the next organism, and will be antibiotic resistant --which is not good.

Antibiotics in factory farms should definitely be regulated -- the fact that these animals are kept in such poor conditions that they need large amounts of antibiotics is appalling (not to mention using antibiotics to increase animal size). If animals become antibiotic resistant then humans can catch what those animals have but not be able to get rid of the problem because antibiotics won't work. I feel that antibiotic regulations would force the farmers and companies to have better conditions for animals (or they would all die, and let's face it, that's bad for business) and there would be less scary bacteria, overall a win-win.

  1. I agree with candace misuse of antibiotics will create a huge epidemic of an antibiotic resistant superbug, and that would be bad for all of us. The best solution is to regulate the antibiotics presribed to the animals, and their hygenic conditions as well as their environment must meet a certain standard of cleanliness.

  2. I agree that regulating antibiotics in farms would most likely force farmers to make the conditions for their animals better. I think that this is a much better solution to fighting disease rather than just giving antibiotics freely and not thinking of the consequences.

  3. What concerns me most is the evolution of antibiotic resistant bateria with the over use of antibiotics. I do not care how they antibiotics are over used, whether on animals in farms or on patients in hospitals, the point is that the development of "super bugs" is bad for human heatlth. Therefore, I agree that antibiotics should be regulated to prevent the creation of diseases science is not currently able to fight. However, I do not inheritly take issue with the use of antibiotics on livestock. If antibiotics are used carefully it can create a healthier population of animals. Whether or not regulation would change farming conditions is questionable. Farming as a business has survived for centuriues on the understanding that ultimately the animals die; the farmers just like an animal's death to be as profitable or filling as possible.

  4. Antibiotics should be regulated without a doubt. Also the environment the animals grow up in should be changed and made better. What is put into the chickens is later getting put into our bodies, slowly killing us.

  5. I agree with everyone regarding the need for regulation of antibiotics. In doing so, this will allow for necessary change and improvement to occur. With the regulation of these antibiotics, superbug diseases will decline. Also, they should be living in reasonable, clean conditions to promote a healthier way of life.
