Cloning Pets
I never knew that people actually wanted to clone their pets. I guess it is a kind of cool idea that you could have a new and improved cat or dog, but it is not for me. The notion of them playing God or not playing God doesn't bother me, but I just think it is morbid. If my beloved pet died, I would not want to replace it with its clone. That seems disrespectful to the pet's memory. "Oh no Fluffy died... Eh, we'll just get a new one. Same difference." I know it is more complex then that for the people actually getting this done and they want to have their pet live on, but I still don't care for it. Cloning, to me, does not bring a person or pet back to life, it is like an identical twin being born later on. Cloning does not change my idea about death but I feel like it gives people the artificial feeling of prolonging life.

It is somewhat weird that people who believe their beloved was so unique and different want to make a copy. How unique is Patches if he is the fifth clone of Spot? Not very. That is if what these companies paid to preserve these pet cells say is true; that the clones will bear strong resemblance to the originals. While this may be better than puppy mills, it is still in murky waters of ethically. In the end though, it maybe a bridge that is not crossed for a while, as commercial cloning is still unavailable.
ReplyDeleteI agree. And even if it was cloned i dont see how it could have the same exact personality as the one that it was cloned with. I would never clone my pet. "fluffy's" memory wouldnt be as special if you knew that when he did you would just in a way get him back. I dont think people should be cloned either. I think it would be crazy and creepy it think that when my parents pass away that they will be cloned and exact copys would take there place. Cloning just does not sit well with me in that regard. Now cloning could be used in helpful ways but this is just not one of them.
ReplyDeleteCloning any living organism is considered artificial life. There is a reason for life and death, it's a circle of life and when you disrupt that process, there are dire consequences for that. I'm all for cloning in science, but it should be used for a good cause, not for our own selfish personal gain of getting our pet back. Clone organs for people who need it and can't find a donor, but that's as far as we should go. Besides, cloning animals won't replace the animal that was there before, it will be a completely different animal with a new personality.
